Honda Media Challenge Starts 8th Season
The 8th running of the Honda Media Challenge got underway last August 12 when first-timers and veterans opened the season with a warm-up track day at the Carmona Racing Circuit. This year's iteration of the Jazz VTEC Media Challenge is bigger and better, with 12 media teams competing for top honors, using 6 track-modified Honda Jazz VTEC cars.
With almost half of the final roster of participants consisting of novice drivers from print and broadcast media organizations, the compulsory race clinic and track day was an essential pre-requisite to ensure that all participants learn basic performance driving in preparation for the competition rounds.
During the lecture portion held the afternoon before, such topics as proper seat position and distance, hand position, footwork, accelerating and braking, balance and car control, understeer and oversteer, and racing lines were discussed by the race instructors. These theoretical inputs were then reinforced through the various driving exercises at the race track the following day.
With the race instructors and marshals present at the Carmona Racing Circuit to ensure that safety ruled above else, Media Challenge first-timers were taught how to drive properly on the race track, correct braking and cornering techniques, as well as other driving techniques that would help them not only on the track, but on real roads as well.
Of course, veteran competitors did not miss the opportunity to log in additional seat time on the official Jazz VTEC competition cars, taking advantage of the practice runs during the track day to gain more experience on the track.
Media organizations represented in the series include: Business Mirror, BusinessWorld, Manila Bulletin, Manila Standard Today, Manila Times, People's Journal, Associated Press, Action & Fitness Magazine, Computer World Philippines, Cruising Magazine, Gadgets Magazine, Metro Active Magazine, Motorcycle Magazine, Rev Magazine, Speed Magazine, Top Gear Philippines, Auto Review, Auto Extreme, Motoring Today, ABS-CBN, Jam 88.3, RX 93.1, 103.5 K-Lite, DZME, DZMM, DZRH, DZXL, PBS, Autoindustriya.com and Kotse.com
This is the second time that the Media Challenge will be held at the 1.2-kilometer long Carmona Racing Circuit which has long been associated with kart racing. But don't let Carmona's small size fool you – its twisting tracks, technical curves and sudden corners have been more than a match for even the most veteran of drivers.
Of course, the real stars of the Media Challenge are the six specially modified Honda Jazz VTEC units that the twelve teams will drive through four rounds of the 2006 season. Basically in stock form, the cars will be exactly the same as their street brethren, except for the mandatory roll-cage and racing seats with 5-point harness. Modifications to the official cars are courtesy of Nodalo's Trading.
Fresh from its 1,440-kilometer record run, Petron is once again providing its Xtra Unleaded gasoline as the official fuel of this exclusive media motorsport event. A specially formulated fuel that has been proven to 'go the extra mile', Xtra Unleaded delivers not only fuel efficiency but also power when you need that extra performance boost.
The competition rounds for the 2006 season are scheduled to run on September 23, October 14, November 18, and December 9.
