Each year, there seems to be a growing number of startups that want to take on the big boys of the supercar and hypercar world. Now there’s another one, and it’s by a US-China startup called Silk-FAW and will be sold under the Hongqi brand. Unlike other startups, the production version of their upcoming hybrid hypercar will be debuting very soon.

Silk-FAW is a joint venture between Chinese automaker FAW (the parent company behind the Hongqi brand) and US company Silk EV. Their upcoming model is called the S9, and the company wants it to go up against Ferrari and Lamborghini supercars. Big aspirations, no less. But, they do have the advantage of having former Ferrari Lamborghini executives on board together with Volkswagen’s ex-styling chief. They also have a facility located in Italy.

But can the S9 take on the supercars of today? On paper, it can. The S9 uses a 4.0-liter V8 paired with two electric motors. Combined output is said to be at 1,400 horsepower. No performance details were mentioned, but it seems to have the power to reach speeds of over 300 km/h and beyond. As for the design, it certainly looks like a proper hypercar too. It features a sleek front end with lots of vents paired with an aggressive-looking rear.

When will the completed S9 debut? According to a report by Automotive News, the hybrid hypercar will be revealed on September 4, the opening day of the Milan Design Week. Given the distinct styling of the hypercar, it seems like a proper event for the launch. The report adds that production of the S9 is scheduled to begin in 2023.

Considering that the launch is a month away, Silk-FAW is busy working on the finishing touches. Will there be drastic design changes compared to the prototype shown here? Or will they change things up for the production model? But more importantly, do you think the S9 has the capabilities to go up against Lamborghinis and Ferrari?
