If your current Mazda’s Jinba-ittai – that connection between the car and the driver – has made your experience behind the wheel so fulfilling, Mazda Motor Corporation (MMC) has more in store.
MMC has just announced the introduction of a full suite of ‘vehicle motion control technologies’ called SKYACTIV-Vehicle Dynamics whose features will be introduced one-by-one starting with the updated Mazda3.
The new Mazda3, which is known as Axela in Japan and was launched July 14, will come with G-Vectoring Control (GVC) and will have the ‘novel idea’ of using the engine to increase the chassis performance.
G-Vectoring Control is the world’s first control system to adjust engine torque in response to steering inputs to have integrated control of lateral and longitudinal acceleration forces while optimizing the vertical load on each wheel to provide smooth and efficient vehicle motion.
With the load on each wheel optimized, the movements of the vehicle is more attuned to the driver’s intentions, which reduces the need for steering corrections, improves handling and stability on wet roads while enhancing traction to inspire more driver confidence.
Passenger comfort is also greatly improved as acceleration forces are smoothened out ‘reducing torso sway’ for a more relaxed ride.
GVC is useful in various situations including city and highway driving and will benefit drivers of all skill levels.
Along with the debut of GVC from Mazda’s SKYACTIV-Vehicle Dynamics, the 2017 Mazda3 with SKYACTIV-D engines will come with DE boost control to make fuel injection more precise enhancing responsiveness and reducing engine knock, and also for a more controlled torque response.
All 2017 Mazda3 models with SKYACTIV-D 2.2L engines will now come with i-ACTIV AWD and electric parking brake while the lineup has expanded with the addition of the SKYACTIV-D 1.5 engine.
The 2017 Mazda3 will come standard with the following features:
Enhanced Active Driving Display with full color, higher brightness and contrast while adjusting the position of relevant information about the driving environment to the top half of the display.
Driver seat memory function can now save the angle, brightness and content settings of the Active Driving Display.
Mazda's first Traffic Sign Recognition System (TSR) the uses a forward-sensing camera to read speed limit signs and show it on the Active Driving Display. A flashing light signals the driver if speed limit has been exceeded. A buzzer can be set to sound off as well. This feature also detects ‘no entry’ and stop signs.
Adaptive LED Headlights with high-beams that are divided into four horizontal blocks that can be individually turned off. When high-beams are used at 40kph or faster, LED blocks are automatically turned off if the system senses oncoming traffic. Low-beams spread the light wider at speeds below 40kph to illuminate the sides and intersections as well.In highway mode travelling at 95kph or higher, headlamps are aimed higher to let the driver see much farther.
- Advanced Smart City Brake Support that uses a forward-sensing camera that can detect pedestrians as well as vehicles. Vehicles can be detected at speeds between 4 – 30kph to 4 – 80kph, pedestrians between 10 - 80kph.
Minor interior enhancements including changes to the dashboard to create a ‘sense of breadth’ inside and an upgrade of individual components for higher quality and durability have been done.
The 2017 Mazda3 will come in nine colors including new hues Eternal Blue Mica and Sonic Silver Metallic.
