Hot Wheels has something big in store this May. Best of all, it involves Mario Kart.
The toy company collaborated with Nintendo to create a new Mario Kart track set. As with all Hot Wheels sets, it even comes with matching karts. No, we're not talking about cars with Mario or Luigi aesthetics. These are straight-up Mario Kart characters in go-karts, similar to what you'd find in the video game. Although the product photos show Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi, they are not included in the set. Instead, only the Mario and King Boo karts are packaged along with the kit.
Possibly the best bit of all is the track. What better track to re-create in Hot Wheels than the iconic Rainbow Road – a staple in nearly all Mario Kart games since the first one released in 1992. Similar to other Hot Wheels tracks, the Rainbow Road track is reconfigurable. Owners can transform the track from winding roads where the karts fall off, just like the game, to just a straight line. But where's the fun in a straight line Rainbow Road track? Unfortunately, the track doesn't seem long enough for a continuous loop unless you order two or more sets and connect them all.
According to IGN, the Hot Wheels Rainbow Road set was available for pre-order on Amazon for USD 119.99 or roughly PHP 5,830 and comes out on May 29. Upon checking the listing, however, the Hot Wheels Rainbow Road set is already sold out. Instead, it's already being re-sold at a mark up of USD 400 (PHP 19,340). It seems scalpers have gotten the beat on us once again.
Hopefully, Mattel releases more units of the Hot Wheels Rainbow Road set in the future. Even for die-hard Mario Kart fans, paying a ridiculous amount from resellers isn't worth it.
