The ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP) recently concluded their Grand Prix Awards of 2020. There, they lauded the efforts of several automakers, individuals, and pioneers who promoted raising the standards of automotive safety in the region last year.
One of the awards given out by the agency is the “Most Five-Star Brand of 2019-2020”. It was a close match between Honda and Toyota with a huge chunk of their models getting top marks in both active and passive safety. When the results were tallied, it was Toyota who edged out its closest competitor, giving the award to Japan's largest automaker.
So, what Toyota models have ASEAN NCAP's seal of approval? That would be most of them. The most affordable Toyota with a five-star rating is the Vios along with its hatchback counterpart, the Yaris. The redesigned Corolla and Camry also received high marks for safety.
Their SUVs and crossovers were rated highly, too, with the Rush, Corolla Cross, and Fortuner receiving high scores. Also included in the list is the popular Innova. Thanks to the redesign that now includes a hood, the Hiace (along with its derivatives) is one of the safest vans tested by the agency.
All in all, that's nine models with five stars from ASEAN NCAP. You may be wondering about bigger and specialty models from the brand. For instance, the Land Cruiser isn't mentioned, along with the GR Supra. That's because ASEAN NCAP has yet to test these cars. As for the Wigo and Avanza, those models got four out of five stars.
