Aiming to lead
Hyundai Motor America has just implemented a new ground breaking (or is it braking?) system to prevent cases of unintended acceleration.
Beginning with models produced this month, all Hyundai models (for the U.S. market) will be equipped with a brake override system as part of the Engine Control Unit (ECU), cutting throttle and preventing subsequent acceleration. The advanced safety feature predates an upcoming mandate from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Sudden Unintented Acceleration (SUA) became a widespread concern following several cases concerning Toyota vehicles in 2009-2010. The SUA cases of Toyota were traced to faulty Electronic Throttle Control units (ETC) produced by CTS in China, resulting in a massive recall in the U.S. and Europe, as well as a U.S. Congressional hearing.
