As good as business is turning out to be in Iloilo City, it also brings a slew of cargo trucks and vans on a regular basis that have turned the city's 'major roads and highways' into parking lots.
Iloilo City currently has a Truck Ban Ordinance and an On-Road Ordinance forbidding parking on roads between 5AM to 10PM from Monday to Sunday and it carries a penalty of Php 300.
Councilor Plaridel Nava of Iloilo City has filed a proposal for a 24/7 total parking ban on these trucks and container vans citing how it “poses hazards and serious threats to the lives of motorists and pedestrians”.
“The time frame is now subject to abuse of truck drivers and owners. They deliberately converted and appropriated the roads as their parking areas or at least an extension of their garage,” said Nava.
Councilor Nava recognizes the contribution of these companies through taxes and employment but he does cite the importance of implementing the local ordinances, no exceptions.
“The city government seems helpless in addressing on road parking. The City Council has already armed the Executive Branch with all kinds of legislative measures to combat and suppress invaders of the road,” added Nava.
Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and officials of the city are now in talks with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and barangay officials regarding their role in apprehending offenders if and when authorized to do so.
