It looks like Mazda Philippines distributor Bermaz Auto Philippines Inc. (BAPI) is set to dip its toes into the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) arena.

While the automaker already has a wide range of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), Mazda Philippines has yet to join the growing PHEV market. Well, that may soon change after the Department of Energy (DOE) updated its list of recognized PHEVs.

Recently getting regulatory approval from the agency is none other than the Mazda CX-80 PHEV, and it looks like there could be a total of two variants on offer. Based on DOE's listing, the CX-80 PHEV will apparently be offered in AWD Premium and AWD Exclusive variants. Despite the difference, both models will come with an electrified 2.5L SkyActiv-G inline-four that's assisted by an electric motor and a 17.8 kWh battery pack.

Based on the available specifications, the CX-80 2.5L PHEV will have a maximum engine output of 141 kW (or 192 PS) and a maximum electric power of 129 kW (or 175 PS). Based on what other markets get, the 2.5L PHEV powertrain for the CX-80 delivers a combined 327 PS and a healthy 500 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the 17.8 kWh battery pack gives the CX-80 an electric range of up to 61 km, based on the WLTP standard. Power is then sent to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

For those who are not familiar, the CX-80 is essentially a stretched CX-60 with third-row seats and comes with longer rear doors for easier ingress & egress for the second-row passengers. Speaking of the second row, the CX-80 can be specified with captain seats instead of the standard bench for a more opulent riding experience. It's also available with power-folding third-row seats for easier stowage of items and other cargo.

With the CX-80 already getting approval from the DOE, perhaps Mazda Philippines is already in the process of launching it later this year. If anything, perhaps we can expect Mazda to reveal it before 2026 ends.
