It seems Mitsubishi is looking to add another EV into its growing portfolio of electrified vehicles. Aside from the all-new Outlander making its debut this year, Mitsubishi has also been busy working alongside Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC Motor) for an all-new vehicle.

The result? An EV concept called the Airtrek, and it's coming sooner than you think.

Despite being billed as a concept, the upcoming EV features Mitsubishi's signature Dynamic Shield look. Based on the teaser photos, it looks like the Airtrek borrowed some inspiration from the 2022 Outlander. It's slated to be launched later this year and will be the fourth model in Mitsubishi Motors' lineup in China.

From the sleek front grille, thin LED daytime running lights, and unique front bumper, it heavily resembles the new crossover. From the back, however, it appears to differ greatly as it has inverted L-shaped taillights. For reference, the current Outlander has horizontal wraparound units.

Is the Mitsubishi Airtrek concept a preview of an EV Outlander? image

Exact details about the EV concept itself remain a mystery. However, they did mention that the EV concept will come with the so-called “e-cruising SUV” philosophy. It will focus on three keywords which are 'electric', 'expanding', and 'expressive'. With it, Mitsubishi says the upcoming EV concept will “expand life's pleasures with a car” while also “expressing the uniqueness of Mitsubishi Motors” with EV technology.

"We have developed the Airtrek as an SUV that enables customers to enjoy limitless adventures. Designed exclusively for the Chinese market, the all-new Airtrek will be launched by the end of this year as the fourth model of Mitsubishi Motors' lineup in China. With the addition of this electric vehicle, we aim to contribute to creating a sustainable mobility society," said John Signoriello, Executive Officer, Global Marketing & Sales Officer at Mitsubishi.

Could the concept be just a redesigned Outlander with an all-electric powertrain? Or will the Airtrek be a unique EV model meant to represent Mitsubishi's electric endeavors? Unfortunately, that will have to wait until Mitsubishi finally reveals the. Airtrek EV concept in full.
