It looks like the Macan will not be the only model from Porsche that will make the transition over to electric power. Besides the crossover, a certain mid-engine road car from Stuttgart will also be available as an electric vehicle (EV) in the near future.

You read that right, it appears the Boxster could be the next in line to receive an EV makeover. With the electric revolution sweeping automakers left and right, we're not entirely surprised Porsche is exploring the idea of an all-electric roadster / sports car.

According to Oliver Blume, CEO of Porsche AG, the mid-engine design of the Boxster could allow engineers to turn it into an EV. However, Blume did mention that the company has yet to decide whether to fully transform the Boxster as an electric sports car.

“We will decide this year in what direction we will develop the Boxster segment. When we do an electric cars it will be a platform specially developed for electric cars. Our opinion is that when you use a car that is designed for a petrol engine it doesn't fit for an EV because of the construction of the body. When you play in the segment like Porsche to develop very sporty cars, it has to be tailor made for each type of engine,” said Blume.

While this idea may look and sound far-fetched, Porsche has already dabbled in EV tech back in 2011. Called the Boxster E, it's essentially an all-wheel drive electric sports car that gets its power from two electric motors. It has a cominbed system output of 242 PS and a whopping 540 Nm of torque. It can go from 0 – 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds, reach a top speed of 200 km/h and have a range of 170 km.

While far from being quick and far-reaching as its gasoline-powered brethren, the Boxster E signalled Porsche's intent to build electrified cars that were both quick and efficient. From the humble concept to the lightning quick Taycan which will supposedly generate over 600 PS, Porsche has come a long way in terms of EV tech. Whether Porsche green lights the project or not,  let's hope the Boxster will remain quick and agile.
