Toyota has a new model coming, and it's a category-buster. Meet the Aygo X Prologue, a concept car that previews the third-generation Aygo, giving us a taste of things to come for one of Toyota's smallest models.
But wait up, isn't the Aygo a hatchback? Why does this one look like a small crossover instead? Well, the previous two generations were, and this upcoming model does retain a hatchback design. However, it also has crossover-inspired styling cues all around. Toyota didn't even confirm whether it's a crossover or a hatchback. In the press release, it's simply referred to as an “A-segment” model. Adding to the confusion, the “X” doesn't necessarily stand for “crossover” since the current Aygo also uses it to denote trim level.
One thing is for sure, the design of the new Aygo will look wild. At the front, it has sharp C-shaped headlights connected by an LED piece. The large center opening gives the Aygo X Prologue a mean look. Meanwhile, a skid plate and black trim all around the lower edge and fenders give the X Prologue the signature crossover look. The oversized wheels, pop-out door handles, and small side mirrors will unlikely make it to the production model, but it does enhance the hatchback's crossover look.
While the front end looks like a crossover, the rear is more akin to a hatchback. It features a large glass rear hatch flanked by a vertical LED taillight connected similar to the headlights. There is also a skid plate fitted to the rear bumper that incorporates a bicycle holder.
The cabin remains a mystery at this point, along with powertrain specifications. As such, we don't know if the Aygo X Prologue will be an EV or powered by a traditional internal combustion engine. Being an A-segment model, it will slot below the Yaris or Yaris Cross, assuming it is a crossover.
With the “Prologue” model revealed, the production model Aygo X is expected to make its debut before the end of the year. At least then, we will be able to find out whether the next-generation Aygo will be a crossover or continue to be a city car.
