LA 2017: Lexus goes large with seven-seater RX L

2018 Lexus RX350L, RX450hL make world premiere in Los Angeles

Three-row crossovers have been increasing popularity due to their versatility, additional seating and sleek mid-size package. With the possibility of a Lexus minivan or MPV as highly unlikely, the luxury auto brand has decided to join the fray with a variation of its RX crossover, the RX L, that offers more seating.

With the new RX 350L and RX 450hL, Lexus gives the venerable RX crossover a slight tweak by extending the rear approximately 110 mm to offer an extra row seats. The third row can be power-folded individually with its 50/50 configuration or stowed completely into a flat floor to store more cargo.

The second row has been raised slightly to improve legroom. While 40/20/40 split second row is standard on the RX350L, it can also be specced with captain’s chairs (standard on RX450hL).

Under the hood, the RX 350L retains same 3.5-liter V6 rated at 292 PS and 360 Nm mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. It is available in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The RX 450hL on the other retains the same hybrid powertrain consisting of a 3.5-liter V6 and two electric motors rated at a combined 310 PS with all-wheel drive. The hybrid system is mated to a CVT.

Despite the slightly extended exterior, Lexus designers have managed to keep the RX L true to its sleek and  sophisticated form consistent with L-finesse styling. The new RX L will also be finished in a scratch-resistant self-restoring coat, using a high-performance macromolecular polymer.

For safety, it is equipped with Lexus Safety System+ which includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keep Assist with Steering Assist, Intelligent High Beams and All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Blind Spot Monitor with Intuitive Parking Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Braking are also available.

Lexus has not officially announced the availability of the RX L for other markets, but it is expected to be sold globally, as well.
