Following months of spy shots and teasers, Mercedes-Benz has pulled the covers off their all-new four-door coupe, the CLS. It marks the third generation of this model line and retains familiar styling cues, as well as ushering in a new engine.
At the front is a fascia that is bolder and more aggressive in appearance than its predecessor. It new grill sits lower and wider than the soon to be outgoing model. There is also a unique pattern to differentiate it from its more upright sibling, the E-Class. It is then complemented by teardrop-shaped headlights, incorporating the brand's LED lighting system. Bumper designs vary depending on the variant chosen. Non-sporting models get a rounded-off design featuring large air intakes on each corner. AMG Line cars meanwhile get a more defined corner edges and even larger corner air intakes.
On to its side, it retains the model's signature sweeping roof line. Complementing this are the pillarless doors, further enhancing its streamlined look. Also seen here is the arched window line, another signature of the CLS since its first iteration way back in late 2004. The forward-slanting front end is reminiscent of what Mercedes-Benz calls a 'shark nose' design, giving the impression of a long hood. In tune with the CLS' signature design cues, the rear end droops down lower than the middle section of the car.
Moving to the rear, its shoulder line blends into the flat fascia. Characteristic features include the two-section taillamps, reflectors positioned in the rear bumper, location of the license plate in the bumper and the Mercedes star at the center of the trunk lid. Like the headlamps, the LED taillamps have a crystalline appearance and create a three-dimensional effect.
Inside, Mercedes-Benz has given the all-new CLS a sportier, width-accentuated cockpit. It is available with a variety of color combinations and claim the design enhances the feeling of spaciousness. The wave-like course of the interior design extends from the front to the rear doors, opening up at the B-pillars. Ambient lighting illuminates the rounded-off air vents, a common theme in current Mercedes-Benz models.
Standard on all CLS coupes is a 12.3 inch wide screen which serves as its infotainment system. It can also be specified with two 12.3-inch displays that merge to form a wide-screen cockpit beneath a shared, continuous glass cover. The center console with open-pored or high-gloss wood appears to be free-floating thanks to its surface trim. Also for the first time, the CLS is available with a five-seat configuration.
Powering the 2018 CLS is a new turbocharged, inline-six engine mated to a mild hybrid system. This marks the return of the straight-six for Mercedes-Benz, who last used this layout in the mid-90's. With a displacement of 3.0-liters, it packs 362 PS and 500 Nm of torque while the electric motor provides a 21 PS and 250 Nm boost. It then shifts via a nine-speed automatic transmission and is available with either rear wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive.
