Automobili Lamborghini will soon not only be making 2 door sports coupes, as the automaker from Sant'Agata Bolognese has just officially announced that they will be making crossovers as well. First previewed at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show as the Lamborghini Urus concept, it is slated to arrive sometime in 2018.
The announcement comes after our report yesterday wherein the Italian government and Lamborghini have come to terms in producing the crossover in the country by providing Lamborghini a EUR 80 million tax break.
“This is a proud moment for everybody in Lamborghini. The introduction of a third model line endorses the stable and sustainable growth of the company and signifies for us the beginning of a new era,” said Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.
Set to be produced at the company's headquarters in Sant'Agata Bolognese, the upcoming crossover according to the company, will provide additional growth for Lamborghini while also expanding the automaker's product range.
In order to make the crossover possible, Lamborghini will expand their factory from 80,000 square meters to 150,000 square meters by building new facilities like a new production line, storage areas and a bigger Research & Development (R&D) department. Furthermore, the automaker also plans to hire 500 new employees.
“Lamborghini is today one of the world’s most exclusive brands. We at Audi are very proud of all our Italian subsidiaries. I am delighted at this outcome for both Lamborghini and Italy, and thank the Italian government for their collaboration in helping to make this possible,” said Luca de Meo, Board Member for Sales and Marketing at Audi AG.
The automaker expects to sell about 3,000 units of the crossover per year and key market areas for the soon-to-be-released nameplate will primarily be China, Germany, the Middle East, Russia and USA.
