Imagine a world where tricycles actually follow road rules

Most tricycles are unruly and their Tricycle Operators and Drivers' Association (TODA) is disorganized. That is a sad fact that must be fixed as most people use tricycles as it is an affordable and reliable means of transportation.

House Bill 592 aka the Magna Carta for Tricycle Drivers and Operators act by Congressman Christian Tell A. Yap wants is working on that. The lawmaker wants to mandate a uniform rule which gives cities and municipalities (LGU) the power to regulate the operation of tricycles.

The bill also mandates that the LGU be the one to grant permits that are subject to the guidelines from the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Land Transportation Office (LTO), and the Land Transportation Franchise and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). Lastly, the bill seeks to provide and extend affordable insurance, social security, and healthcare to the tricycle sector.

This bill wants to see the TODAs do good and be responsible on the road. Currently, several aren’t fully organized as well and this bill coming could change all that.

The Congressman believes that if you keep the driver happy, the operator gets productive output. We hope that it will be the case as tricycles make up a large number of motorized vehicles on the road. There are an estimated 4 million tricycles registered in the Philippines. Imagine if they all are law-abiding motorists, wouldn’t that be awesome?
