Toyota Corolla Axio 50 Limited revealed

The Corolla turns 50 this year, and Toyota recently released a special edition model that commemorates the nameplate's heritage. Called the Corolla Axio Hybrid G 50 Limited, the special model takes inspiration from the first-generation model that was launched back in 1966.

Starting with the exterior, the one-off gets bi-beam LED headlights as standard, along with a distinct chrome grill and lower grill. Over to the side and rear, the unique Corolla Axio gets side skirts, 16-inch alloy wheels and even smoked LED taillights (not pictured).

Distinguishing itself from the rest of the Corolla Axio models is the special badging that can be found on the trunk lid. The logo itself takes inspiration from the original logo used on the first-generation Corolla. For those not in the know, the name itself means 'crown flowers' in Latin, hence the three flowers atop the letter C.

Also providing a throwback to original 1966 Corolla is the predominantly red cabin. According to Toyota, they were able to recreate the exact hue via the company's Design Division who lifted a sample of the color from the original nameplate.

The special edition Corolla Axio will be solely be available with a hybrid powertrain that is comprised of a 1.5-liter inline-four and an electric motor. The internal combustion engine produces 73 PS and 111 Nm of torque while the electric motor provides an extra 60 PS and 169 Nm of torque. Power is then sent to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

It will only be limited to 500 models, all of which are only available to the Japanese market. Colors available for the Corolla Axio Hybrid G 50 Limited will be White Pearl Crystal and Black Mica. It will be available in the Japanese market by September 1, 2016.
