The updated 2016 Ford Explorer made its debut at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show packed with a new face and more technology. Ford also introduced a new 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine and an all-new Platinum series which will slot in above the Sport and Limited variants.
The exterior of the 2016 Explorer was redesigned by Ford. It is equipped with restyled LED headlights, mesh front grill, new LED fog lamps and side mirrors. The headlights and front grill of the 2016 Explorer are positioned higher as compared to the previous model. Moreover, the bumper of the 2016 Explorer now comes with a silver accent. Turning at the side, the vehicle is fitted with new door moldings and slimmer skirts.
At the rear, the 2016 Explorer comes with redesigned taillights and chrome trim. It now also has a new spoiler, shark-fin antenna, larger reflectors and trapezoidal exhaust tips. The vehicle sits on standard 18-inch or optional 20-inch wheels and Ford offers new tire options for improved ride and handling.
Inside, interior changes include new door seals, acoustic glass, stitched armrests and the infotainment buttons. The cabin is adorned with wood trims as seen on the dashboard, door panels and steering wheel. In addition, silver accents are laid out througout the cabin and the Ford oval on the steeering wheel is finished in aluminum.
The 2016 Explorer features technology updates that includes new exterior cameras with washers, enhanced active park assist, hands-free liftgate and active grill shutters that adjust to cool the engine while reducing drag.
There are a number of available engines that power the 2016 Explorer. A new 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine delivers 274 PS with 406 Nm of torque. The said engine will be available on the base, the XLT and the Limited series.
On the other hand, the standard 3.5-liter V6 engine generates 294 PS and 474 Nm of torque. The Explorer Sport and the Platinum edition are equipped with the standard 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 enigne that produces 370 PS and 474 Nm of torque. All engines are mated to a six-speed 'SelectShift' automatic transmission.
