LTFRB proposes new rules for taxi drivers

Sets meeting with operators today, December 15

In order to combat the mounting complaints regarding crimes committed by taxi drivers, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has come up with several guidelines that will be proposed to taxi operators in a meeting today.

Led by LTFRB Chairman Atty. Winston Gines, the proposed guidelines include:

Operators will be mandated by the agency to provide a list of their drivers, including their full names, personal information, employment history and accident record.   It will then be fed to the LTFRB database for a background check on each of the drivers.

Operating taxis must have an 8.5-inch by 5.5-inch ID of the driver hanging from the taxi's rear view mirror at all times to allow the passenger to identify the driver in emergency cases.

Operators must secure clearance from the LTFRB before hiring a new driver so that the agency can conduct the necessary background check.
