This year's Wards 10 Best Engines saw more mainstream brands being recognized. Following the test of 32 new engines, only two came from luxury marques. WardsAuto also noticed another trend this year, namely the record amount of hybrids and electric vehicles in the top ten, and the fact that no German automakers made the cut.
Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar and Kia comprise the top ten of 2018. The current crop saw four out of its ten entries with pure electric and hybrid technologies. Chevrolet's 150-kW Electric Propulsion System in the Bolt EV, Chrysler's 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 plug-in hybrid in the Pacifica Hybrid, the Honda Clarity's 130-kW Fuel Cell/Electric Propulsion System and the Toyota Camry's 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle hybrid, garnered praises from WardsAuto.
Interestingly, a naturally aspirated engine joins the top ten following last year's list mostly comprising of turbocharged or electrically assisted engines. It's also worth noting that the sole naturally aspirated engine is also a V8. This particular engine comes from the Ford Mustang GT with its Coyote 5.0-liter mill.
Nissan on the other hand continued their streak in the 10 Best Engines award with their twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. Dubbed the VR30, the engine was also included in the 10 Best from the previous year.

The winning automakers will receive their awards at the 2018 North American International Auto Show (NAIS) in January.
