Mazda ups the ante in 2019 MX-5 RF with more powerful engine, new safety tech

Last June, Mazda officially introduced the more powerful MX-5 Roadster for the North American and European markets. It now benefits from an uprated 2.0-liter SkyActiv powertrain and comes standard with a plethora of safety kit. Now, the company has brought the same upgrades for the 2019 MX-5 RF.

Like the Japanese-spec roadsters, the MX-5 RF's SkyActiv engine gets lighter pistons and connecting rods, a revised valvetrain and a new exhaust system.

Starting with the engine itself, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder motor now has an increased valve opening angle and valve lift, and a bigger diameter exhaust manifold. With it, Mazda said that the MX-5 has reduced exhaust loss which makes for improved power output. Also changed were the intake ports and the addition of higher-pressure fuel injectors.

The result is an engine that now puts out 184 PS at 7000 rpm and 205 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. Compared to the pre-updated version, the engine now generates 24 PS and 5 Nm than before, and has a higher 7500 rpm redline (the previous model only had a 6800 rpm redline). Available transmissions for the 2019 MX-5 RF include a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters and Sport Mode.

Aside from the upgrades, the 2019 MX-5 can also be specified with a plethora of safety features. These include the following: reverse camera with rear parking sensors, traffic sign recognition, driver attention alert, high beam control, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, smart city brake support and lane-departure warning.

Available only for the US market is the MX-5 Club. It comes standard with Bilstein dampers, a strut tower bar and a limited-slip differential (M/T models only) for better cornering capability. Improved stopping power, on the other hand, comes courtesy of a Brembo brake package with red-painted calipers on all four corners. Recaro heated seats, as well as 17-inch gunmetal alloy wheels from BBS are also available for the MX-5 Club.

The 2019 Mazda MX-5 RF will be made available in the North American market soon. Other markets such as the Philippines could receive the upgraded roadster at a later date.
