Mazda North American Operations has announced a recall of over 18,000 units of the 2003-2004 Mazda6 and 2004 RX-8.
Mazda explains that in an event of a crash, the airbag inflator on the passenger side may produce excessive internal pressure, which will cause the inflator itself to burst. The resulting burst from the inflator will send metal fragments onto the airbag, potentially injuring the passenger or the other occupants in the car.
Owners with the said defect will be notified by Mazda and will replace the airbag inflator free of charge. Replacement of the defective part will begin in August 2014.
Mazda units in the Philippines are not affected by the said the recall.
