Mazda MX-5 sets new record with 900,000 sales mark over 21 years
Nine hundred thousand strong
The iconic roadster from Mazda, the MX-5, has once again set a new record for 2 seater sports cars when the 900,000th unit rolled off the assembly line on February 4, 2011.
The car known as the Miata in the USA and Roadster in Japan, was first launched to the public at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show, at the time sporting a 1.6L inline-4 engine and a light weight of 980 kilos. The popular roadster became a true hit, and quickly racked up the sales figures.
The MX-5 is the current record holder with Guinness World Records as the world's best selling two seater sports car, a record that it has held since May 2000 when the model reached the 531,980 mark.
Mazda is currently reapplying to Guinness World Records to update the record at the 900,000 mark.
