While hybridization is becoming one of the alternatives to diesel power, Mazda isn't quite ready to let go of diesels just yet. In fact, the Japanese automaker has dropped in their re-tuned and revised SkyActiv-D to their flagship sedan, the Mazda 6. Recently released in Japan, it is, essentially, the same revamped turbodiesel as seen in the all-new CX-5.

Making its debut in Japan, the main highlight for the updated Mazda 6 SkyActiv-D is more power under the hood. At the moment, Mazda's diesel makes 175 PS and 420 Nm of torque. In the new one, it gets uprated to 190 PS and a substantial 450 Nm, on par with the European offerings such as the Audi A4 TDI Ultra and BMW 320d. Engine size on the other hand is retained at 2.2-liters. Like before, it shifts via a six-speed automatic transmission.

Of course, Mazda didn't leave out the enthusiasts for the diesel executive sedan. Perhaps unusual for its segment, Mazda will also offer a six-speed manual transmission for the big sedan, which is rarity in its home market. On top of that, there is also an option of all-wheel drive for it as well.

As for its looks, it's the same as its gas-powered counterparts. There's a new grill with thicker borders and it gets a wing-tipped look to go along with. Mildly reshaped headlights are also some of the changes made to the car, as well as new wheel choices. Inside, changes consist of new air-conditioning vents, a reshaped center stack and an upgraded infotainment system with new software.

The new SkyActiv-D engine and all-wheel drive are available for both the sedan and the station wagon. While it is possible we might get the more powerful diesel engine, the chances of the all-wheel drive system making it to our shores are little to none.
