McLaren GT announced that they would be producing a track-only variant of the 12C to be named as the McLaren 12C GT Sprint. Developed by McLaren GT, the motorsport arm of the McLaren Group, it is designed to offer further enhanced handling through optimized aerodynamics.
The 12C GT Sprint signifies McLaren’s intent to continuously develop the 12C model to bridge the gap between the 12C and the 12C GT3 and 12 GT Can-Am Edition race cars.
For a more track-focsed GT racing experience, McLaren GT further developed the 12C’s ProActive Chassis Control (PCC), Brake Steer and McLaren Airbrake. The 625 PS 3.8-liter twin-turbo engine was also modified to accommodate a unique oil system as well as a cooling system which has similar features with the 12C GT3 race car.
The PCC suspension system has been tuned and recalibrated to lower the ride height by 40mm. Racing slick tires from Pirelli was also fitted to the 19-inch OZ wheels to provide a firmer and more circuit-orientated setup. The 12C GT Sprint has three unique handling modes which allow the driver to select their preferred damping, roll stiffness and ESP settings.
For its aerodynamic and cooling qualities, the 12C GT Sprint features a more aggressive front bumper, GT3-inspired bonnet with radiator exit ducts and front wing louvers. Braking system was also upgraded to carbon ceramic (CCM) brake discs.
Inside the cabin, the 12C GT Sprint is fitted with an FIA-approved rollcage and integrated fire extinguisher system. A fully adjustable HANS-approved, lightweight composite racing seat fitted with full six-point harness provides safe and optimum driving position. A lightweight air-conditioning system was retained for added comfort. A carbon fiber dash houses the race developed digital display and key vehicle controls which relays information with a McLaren GT developed steering wheel.
Further enhancements are available through a range of bespoke options including a CFD (computational fluid dynamics) developed aerodynamic package including carbon fiber rear wing and front splitter, and further lightweight components including a polycarbonate windscreen.
The 12C GT Sprint, finished in heritage McLaren Orange as standard, will make its world premiere at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed with the initial batch of 20 cars set to be delivered within the year.
