Mercedes-Benz's enduring 4x4 has just been given a facelift along with new and updated engines and a new special edition AMG model that spruces up the exterior design of the classic SUV.
Superficially, both the G350 and the G500 model now feature restyled bumpers along with flared wheel arches that were originally standard only on the G 63 and G 65 AMG variants. New colors are also available on the G-Class including Solar Beam, Tomato Red, Alien Green, Sunset Beam and Galactic Beam.
Peripheral parts such as side mirrors, front and rear bumpers, wheel arches and the roof itself are finished in obsidian black which provide a striking contrast for the SUV.
Inside, it has a new instrument cluster that the automaker describes as a 'two-tube look' and features a 4.5-inch display and redone gauges and needles. Additionally, the topstitching of the seats and interior trim matches exterior paintwork.
Over to the engines, the G350's 3.0-liter turbo diesel V6 now produces 245 PS and 600 Nm, eclipsing the pre-facelift figures of 211 PS and 540 Nm. The G500 on the other hand is now fitted with the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that first debuted in the G500 4x4² concept. It puts out 422 PS and 610 Nm of torque which is readily available between 2,250 – 4,750 rpm. It can go from 0 – 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds.
As for the AMG models, the G 63's twin-turbo 5.4-liter V8 now produces 571 PS (20 PS more) but retains its 760 Nm torque rating. The 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 found on the G 65 on the other hand now generates 630 PS (an additional 18 PS) but keeps the 1,000 Nm torque figure.
A special model called the AMG Edition 463 is also available for the two AMG models and will give the G-Class 'an impressive sporty look' as claimed by the automaker. From the outside, it will be fitted with a stainless steel underguard, AMG sport stripes on the side and 21-inch forged wheels. Inside, it will have a two-tone instrument panel, two-tone leather seats, diamond-quilted pattern on the seats and center panel, carbon fiber trim and nappa leather used on the door pulls.
