Mercedes-Benz has reclaimed the top spot as the world's premium car manufacturer in terms of sales, beating fellow rival automaker BMW.
The automaker sold 2,083,888 new cars worldwide in 2016, higher than its sales in 2015 by 11.3-percent. The company breached the 2-million annual sales mark for the first time in its 130-year history, a milestone that can be attributed to its renewed strategy to focus on designing and manufacturing stylish, high-technology vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz said that the strong patronage in Europe as well as China was the main driver of growth for the brand. The automaker commanded a double-digit sales increase in the UK, France, Italy, Spain, and Belgium, while China remained as its biggest individual market. In the Asia-Pacific region, the three-pointed star reported best-ever yearly sales in Japan, South Korea, Australia, Taiwan, and Malaysia.
In the Philippines, Mercedes-Benz also posted its highest ever annual sales in 2016. It sold 943 new passenger cars and 79 commercial vehicles which totals to 1,022 units throughout the year, based on the official figures released by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI). Moreover, December was the highest selling month ever for the brand locally.
“With new cars with pioneering design that inspire our customers and with particularly strong growth, we have climbed to the top of the premium segment. And we are accelerating further—with new technologies, products, and services,” said Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Daimler AG.
