Fourth-gen Mercedes-Benz A-Class gets four-door, long wheelbase version in China

Last February, we saw Mercedes-Benz reveal the fourth-generation A-Class. Compared to its predecessor, the all-new hatchback has been made bigger, sleeker and more high-tech. Now, it's joined by the new Sedan L version that recently made its world debut at the 2018 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.

First revealed as the Concept A during the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show, the A-Class Sedan L will serve as the long wheelbase version of the all-new A-Class and gets the familiar design and trimmings as its five-door version.

Beginning with its exterior, the A-Class Sedan L sports the same front fascia design as its hatchback counterpart. Elongated headlights, as well as the signature front grill give the sedan its sleek appearance. It also borrows the same LED combination taillights from the five-door as well as the dual exhaust pipe finishers at the back. Also, unlike the CLA which comes with the distinct sloping roofline, the A-Class Sedan L has a more traditional design which smoothly slopes down towards the trunk.

Measuring 4609mm long, 1796mm wide and 1460mm tall, the A-Class Sedan L is 191mm longer and 20mm taller than the five-door version. Given its longer 2789mm wheelbase (+60mm), the A-Class Sedan L also benefits from better cabin space for the rear occupants. Trunk capacity, on the other hand, is rated at 420 liters.

Inside, the sedan pretty much gets the same cabin fixtures and styling cues from its hatchback brethren. The new A-Class Sedan comes with the 'avant-garde' look that mimics more upscale Mercedes-Benz models such as the E-Class and S-Class. Free-standing monitors dominate the dashboard of the sedan which display the car's MBUX infotainment system, multi-info display and instrument panel. Standard features like intelligent voice-control, navigation with augmented reality display and heads-up display are available in the A-Class Sedan L.

Under the hood is a 1.3-liter all-aluminum turbocharged four-cylinder engine that benefits from cylinder deactivation. It will be available in two states of tune, 134 PS and 161 PS. A bigger 2.0-liter engine that develops 188 PS will also be available soon. Both engines will be hooked up to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

It is set go up against the likes of the BMW 1 Series Sedan - also a China-only sedan.
