Mercedes-Benz, Nvidia to make self-driving technology available across various models

Mercedes-Benz is looking to make self-driving cars a part of the brand's ever-growing fleet of cars. Just recently, the automaker partnered up with Nvidia, a global leader that specializes in accelerated computing and computer graphics, to develop the next generation of supercomputers for automated cars.

To be rolled out in 2024 across a fleet of next-generation Mercedes-Benz vehicles, the new advanced computing architecture will enable the cars to have upgradable automated driving functions. It is called the 'Nvidia Drive' platform and will become a standard feature for the company's next-generation vehicles.

With it, Mercedes-Benz and Nvidia claim that this will give users the ability to automate driving to and from their regular destinations. Whether it's going to work or visiting relatives, the Nvidia Drive platform means that the car can essentially travel by itself.

A primary feature that the advanced computing architecture will have is that it will have numerous safety and convenience applications available. Moreover, customers will be able to purchase and add capabilities, new software applications, and subscription services, and receive over-the-air software updates during the life of the car.

“We are excited to work with Mercedes-Benz. It’s the perfect partner for us given its long record of innovation and our strong technical relationship. It’s clear from our extensive discussions with Ola and his team, that we share a common vision of the automobile of the future. Together, we’re going to revolutionize the car ownership experience, making the vehicle software programmable and continuously upgradeable via over the air updates,” said Jensen Huang, founder, and CEO of Nvidia.

As for Ola Kallenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, he said that they are delighted to be able to work with Nvidia in developing the high-tech computing architecture for automated driving.

“This new platform will become an efficient, centralized, and software-defined system in our future Mercedes-Benz vehicles. NVIDIA’s AI computing architecture will help us streamline our journey towards autonomous driving. These new capabilities and upgrades will be downloaded from the cloud, improving safety, increasing value, and extending the joy of ownership for all Mercedes-Benz customers,” said Kallenius.

Both Mercedes-Benz and Nvidia will be closely working together to develop the AI and automated vehicle applications that will allow vehicles to drive by themselves. To develop the new models, both companies will be utilizing the Nvidia Drive Infrastructure solutions in order to enable them to share data and develop the deep neural network to handle the requirements of regions where the automated cars will be available.

As cars continue to become more sophisticated, intelligent, and packed with high-tech gizmos, Mercedes-Benz is riding the technological wave in order to benefit their cars. The only question now is, are Mercedes-Benz customers ready to have self-driving cars in their garage soon?
