Can you believe it's already been 40 years since the first G-Class rolled out? Starting out as a humble and rugged 4x4, the G-Class has evolved into one of the most sought-after luxury 4x4s in the market. Despite all that, it kept its signature boxy looks right into the 21st century.
In celebration of the nameplate's 40th anniversary, Mercedes-Benz recently released three special editions of the SUV called 'Stronger Than Time'. Equipped with unique exterior and interior add-ons, as well as a bevy of high-output engines, the Stronger Than Time G-Class editions serve as Mercedes-Benz's gifts to itself.
While it may look like any ordinary G-Class on the road, the new special edition models come with a cool feature. All three are fitted with a special puddle lamp that show the G-Class logo, as well as the 'Stronger Than Time' tagline. In addition, this particular G-Class also has the Stronger Than Time badge on the A-pillar.
Besides those, these G-Class models come with the AMG Line and Stainless Steel Package. With it, all three come with flared wheel arches, AMG design styling elements, and stainless steel trim on the running boards, spare wheel cover and door sills.
At the heart of the first special edition G-Class is a new 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-six. Dubbed the 'OM 656', it's available for the G 400 d and produces 330 PS along with a whopping 700 Nm of torque at 3400 – 4600 rpm. It also benefits from variable valve timing via Camtronic for better fuel efficiency and performance. Power is then sent to a nine-speed G-tronic automatic transmission.
Prefer gasoline power over-diesel? The second Stronger Than Time edition is powered by a bi-turbo V8 as the G 500. It generates 422 PS and a staggering 610 Nm of torque at 2000 – 4750 rpm. It too is connected to a nine-speed automatic gearbox.
Besides celebrating 40 years of the G-Class, the automaker is also commemorating the 20th birthday of the G-Class AMG. Yes, there's also a Stronger Than Time edition of the Mercedes-AMG G63. A more powerful version of the 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 delivers 585 PS and a stump-pulling 850 Nm of torque at 2500 – 3500 rpm. With a rear-biased all-wheel drive system, the G63 can catapult itself from 0 – 100 km/h in as little 4.5 seconds. A nine-speed Speedshift transmission then sends power to all four wheels.
In true Mercedes-Benz fashion, all three are equipped with a wide array of amenities and features. These include: adaptive suspension, parking package with 360-degree around-view, active multicontour seats, Burmester sound system, LED ambient lighting with 64 colors, glass sliding roof, and fine leather upholstery that is available in a wide array of colors / finishes.
