Mercedes updates the A-Class for 2016

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz A-Class refreshed with redone exterior, improved engines

Mercedes-Benz's entry-level nameplate, the A-Class, has just been refreshed by the automaker for the year 2016 and features exterior add-ons, restyled interior design, new and improved engines and a more powerful AMG variant.

Starting from the outside, Mercedes-Benz only applied a handful of exterior tweaks like the reshaped bumpers, diamond front grill and optional LED headlights (standard only on the A45 AMG model). Moreover, the automaker also claimed that the 2016 A-Class now has a more 'arrow-shaped' front bumper which is reminiscent of the 2011 Concept A-Class from which it came from.

Aboard the premium hatchback, it has a tubular design gauge cluster, galvanized switches and an optional 8-inch frameless monitor for the infotainment system. Smartphone integration is now standard for the 2016 A-Class as the onboard system now comes with Apple's CarPlay and Android Auto. Also made available for the 2016 update are new interior finishes and materials that Mercedes-Benz claims will further spruce up the already premium A-Class range.

Most of the gasoline engines have been carried from the pre-facelift version apart from the entry-level A160 that now has a 1.6-liter inline-four that produces 102 PS and 180 Nm of torque. Both the A250 and A250 4MATC's 2.0-liter engine now generate 218 PS, 7 PS more than the pre-facelift version.

Over to diesel, the most frugal engine of the bunch according to the company is the new 1.5-liter inline-four that is available on the A180d BlueEfficiency model. It puts out 109 PS along with 260 Nm of torque and has an average fuel consumption of 28.5 km/l. The A220d's 2.1-liter engine on the other hand gets a slight boost in power as it is now rated at 177 PS (previously 170 PS).

At the top of the range is the A45 AMG which also benefits from the boost in power as its 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four now cranks out 381 PS and 475 Nm of torque. The pre-facelift version only produced 360 PS and 450 Nm of torque. With the aforementioned increase, 0 – 100 km/h comes in at 4.2 seconds (4.6 seconds previously). The engine is then mated to a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox.

An available add-on for the A45 AMG is the AMG Dynamic Plus Package which fits the premium hatchback with a new mechanical front axle locking differential and a AMG Ride Control sport suspension with adaptive damping.
