The biggest infrastructure project in the whole of history of Cebu province is set to get underway as the government is determined to reduce the growing vehicular congestion in Metro Cebu.

In 2018, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced that it will begin implementation of the three-segment Metro Cebu Expressway project. The three segements will be divided into the following:

  • Talisay-Cebu City-Mandaue (Segment 1)
  • Consolacion-Liloan-Compostela-Danao (Segment 2)
  • Naga-Minglanilla (Segment 3)

Part of the 73.75 kilometer-long expressway will also be a 2-kilometer tunnel. With a total estimated cost Php 27 billion, the new six-lane expressway is expected to reduce travel time between the two farthest cities of the province to only one hour when fully completed.

Currently, the only links to these locations are national roads, most of which consist only of two lanes. Some have been widened to four lanes but it doesn’t seem to be enough considering the growing economic activity and flourishing tourism industry.

The project also aims to ease congestion in heavily populated areas such as the towns of Consolacion, Minglanilla. The cities of Mandaue, Talisay, Carcar have also contributed to traffic along the national road.

Construction expected to be completed by December 30, 2022.
