MIAS 2015: Mini 5-door makes PH debut

Mini PH introduces the new Cooper 5 Door variant

The well-known British supermini now has a new body style as Mini PH recently launched the new Cooper 5 Door variant at the 2015 Manila International Auto Show.  Available in both standard and S trim models, the new 5 door version promises to provide better cargo and interior space while still delivering precise handling according to Mini.

The standard 5 door type now measures 3,982mm long and 1,425mm tall which makes it 161mm longer and 11mm taller than the 3 door model. The 1,727mm width carries over from the standard 3 door. The Mini Cooper 5 door S on the other hand measures 155mm longer and its wheelbase has been increased to 2,567mm, 72mm longer than the 3 door.

The added wheelbase gives passengers 37mm more legroom while cargo space has also been increased to 278 liters.

The standard 5 door is available with the 1.5-liter Twin Power Turbo inline-three motor that generates 136 PS at 4,500 rpm and a torque rating of 220 Nm at 1,300 rpm. Its torque output can be increased to 230 Nm via an overboost function which lets the 5 door Cooper go from 0 - 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 km/h.

The Cooper S however, will be driven by a 2.0-liter Twin Power Turbo inline-four engine that is rated to produce 192 PS at 4,700 rpm - 6000 rpm with 280 Nm of torque available at 1,250 - 4750 rpm. Maximum torque output can also be increased up to 300 Nm via the overboost function, which allows the Mini Cooper S 5 door to sprint from 0 - 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds; top speed is limited to 233 km/h.

Both engine variants come with 6-speed automatic transmission equipped with start/stop function. A nifty feature also present on the 6-speed gearbox is that it works in tandem with the onboard navigation system and selects the appropriate gear depending on road conditions.

An optional feature that is available for the new Mini 5 Door Cooper S is the Dynamic Damper Control that gives the supermini two distinct handling personalities. By electronically adjusting the dampers, the driver can set the car for a more comfort-oriented ride, or for a more stiff yet direct sporty ride.

Other driver aids and safety features installed on the new 5 door Mini Cooper are the following: Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) that promotes the car’s forward momentum without influencing self-steering response, Performance Control System that counteracts understeer, and the optional rear-view camera with parking assistant.

The all-new 5 door models are now available for viewing at Mini Global City, Mini Roadshow Greenhills and in Mini Cebu.
