Competition in the compact hatchback/sedan segment will get more intense as Mazda Philippines is set to debut the all-new Mazda2 (Demio in other markets) at this year's Manila International Auto Show.
First revealed by the company back in July 2014, it is one of the automaker's latest cars that make use of the Kodo design language and SkyActiv powertrain. Aesthetically, the front end of the hatchback features sharp-looking headlights along with the brand's distinct grill. The rear on the other hand has sleek taillights and a defined rear bumper.
The sedan variant which debuted during the 2014 Thailand Motor Expo also features a similar exterior design but has a redesigned rear which essentially makes it a scaled-down version of the larger Mazda3 and Mazda6 sedans.
Both the hatchback and sedan variants share a similar cabin layout which has the MZD connect, HMI touchscreen with command control knob and active driving display. International examples of the Mazda2 feature a white color theme while ASEAN versions are likely to feature a dark interior theme.
In terms of engines, Mazda PH is expected to bring in the 1.3-liter gasoline-powered inline-four SkyActiv-G engine that produces 93 PS and 123 Nm of torque. It will be mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox and comes with iStop (auto start/stop) and iEloop regenerative braking system.
It is still unclear whether the larger 1.5-liter unit will be brought in as well as the diesel-driven 1.5-liter SkyActiv-D as the Philippines will only start to implement Euro IV standards starting on January 2016.
