Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) appears adamant in furthering their crossover and SUV lineup after the automaker confirmed that they are indeed working on a new small utility vehicle.
Last week, MMC released their full-fiscal year 2016 forecast, which indicated an increased expenditure for research & development (R&D) over the previous year, as they are developing a new small SUV.
Exact details regarding the upcoming SUV are not yet available, but this could mean the company might be rolling out a crossover based off the Mirage. In an earlier press preview of the Mirage, engineers revealed the possiblity of producing an SUV model using the same platform. Currently, the only other crossovers the company have are the ASX (Outlander Sport) and the Outlander.
Expect the new small SUV however, to incorporate the brand's Dynamic Shield as the company has been busy applying it on their new and current models like the, Outlander, updated ASX, new-generation Montero Sport and Strada pickup.
As for powertrain, there is no word if the 1.2-liter 3A92 inline-three will be used to power the upcoming small SUV. In one of our previous reports however, Mitsubishi is apparently thinking of using turbocharged gasoline engines in power future models. In addition, the company is also considering using a 1.1-liter turbocharged inline-three for the new-generation Mirage slated for 2019.
It also indicated that there could be a new crossover to slot between the ASX and Outlander. It will apparently be driven by a 1.5-liter turbo motor.
Other than the new small SUV, MMC is also working on the new-generation Outlander.
