Mitsubishi debuted the Grand Cruiser Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (GC-PHEV) concept at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. The full-size SUV is a preview of the replacement for the current BK Pajero which is nearing the end of its lifecycle of 8 years.
The GC-PHEV does feature unconventional styling cues and a futuristic interior indicating that the Japanese automaker will come out with another pre-production concept in the near future closer to the actual launch.
The concept features a full-time 4-wheel drive system. It will be based on a front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout plug-in hybrid EV system powered by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 MIVEC engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with high-output electric motor and high-capacity battery.
No further details as to what platform will be used for the GC-PHEV. The current BK Mitsubishi Pajero sold in the Philippines is based on a unibody platform first used in the third generation CK chassis in 1999. It is powered by either a 4M41 3.2-liter Di-D diesel engine or a 6G75 3.8-liter V6 MIVEC gas engine. The Pajero is alternatively called the Montero in the Americas and Shogun in the UK.
