Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has had another strong year in the global automotive market last 2018.
The Japanese automaker managed to have a record sales of 1,218,897 units globally, showing an 18% sales growth compared to 2017. The strong figures show that the automaker continues to have strong momentum with its recovery plan, having double-digit percentage increases in both the domestic and overseas market.
"Our strong performances in 2018 are proof that our Drive For Growth plan to lead Mitsubishi to a sustainable recovery is working. We continue to be exceptionally strong in ASEAN region and are also seeing pleasing growth in other key markets as new products reach customers and our SUV and EV offerings become increasingly relevant and attractive," said Trevor Mann, chief operating officer of Mitsubishi Motors.
New products were said to have helped Mitsubishi achieve the larger sales in 2018. In Japan, the new Eclipse Cross and Outlander PHEV were credited for the growth from 91,630 to 104,611 – an increase of 14% versus 2017.
Meanwhile, export sales were recorded at 1,114,286, an increase of 175,452 units and up by 19%. Some of the export markets for Mitsubishi Motors which showed significant growth were the US with a 14% increase with 118,075 units and Western Europe with 19% growth with 178,414 units.
As a region, the ASEAN market was said to experience the biggest growth. The ASEAN region saw a 35% growth after having sold 322,284 units. In the region, Indonesia was credited as the main driver of this growth with 146,805 sales – a massive 84% increase. The strong Indonesian market performance has also catapulted them to the top spot in global sales. This was mainly attributed to the all-new Xpander MPV which debuted in late 2017. Other strong performances came from Thailand, with sales up 21% to 84,560 units, Vietnam (up 60% to 10,969) and Malaysia (up 32% to 9,261).
Mitsubishi Motors still maintained a strong performance in the Philippines, slightly outperforming the market, having sold 65,894 units in 2018. This puts our country in the top 10 of Mitsubishi's best-selling markets for the year, specifically in 7th place. Imagine that, more people bought Mitsubishi vehicles in the Philippines compared to Germany, Russia, and the U.K.
