Mitsubishi is set to reveal a new car by this year's Geneva Motor Show. Before the reveal however, the automaker first gave a preview of what they will debut come motor show day. It is an all-new compact crossover which, Mitsubishi says, slots in between the ASX and the Outlander.
Judging by the outline, the latest crossover from Mitsubishi follows the form of XR-PHEV II concept, as well as the eX crossover concept which made its premiere during the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. Also seen here are upright, pillar mounted tail lights, upswept headlights and what appears to be the corner of the Dynamic Shield grill.
Back in November, our spies spotted the new Mitsubishi crossover and it bears many similarities with the car in the teaser. We reported that it will possibly be the new ASX but Mitsubishi said that it will be larger than their current B-segment crossover. Like in the preview, the spied crossover also features a distinct window line, as well as the upswept headlights. Despite the false panel, the test car also sports a steeply raked rear tailgate, just like the car in the teaser.
Our spies also caught a glimpse of the interior as well. The new cabin layout is distinctly different from current Mitsubishi models. It gains a new instrument panel and a redesigned touchscreen infotainment system. Retained however are the distinct magnesium-alloy paddle shifters. Do note that this is a prototype and may change once it hits production. At the moment, Mitsubishi has yet to announce its official name. However, the rumor mill suggests the revival of the Eclispe name for this crossover.
Mitsubishi did confirm one of the engine options for the new crossover. Don Swearingen, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America, said that it will be powered by an all-new 2.0 liter, turbocharged engine. With Mitsubishi's commitment to electric powertrains, expect a plug-in hybrid model to join the lineup soon.
