Last week, we were excited to hear that the Adventure name could be revived as Mitsubishi’s new Xpander based crossover. However, it seems that won’t be the case. If these spy shots from the Indonesian website gridoto.com are to be believed, Mitsubishi’s upcoming crossover will be called the Xpander Cross. Furthermore, it will also look just like the Xpander MPV albeit with new wheels, black cladding all around and just some minor design changes front and back.

Taking a closer look at the spy photos, the Xpander Cross looks more like a kit fitted onto the Xpander rather than being a completely new model. As mentioned earlier, the most noticeable difference will be the large black body cladding that surround the SUV rather than the usual chrome trims. Together with the black cladding are the new front and rear bumpers with skid plates, which give the SUV a more rugged look overall.

Other changes include what looks like a new grill, new LED headlights (as opposed to the Xpander’s halogen units), redesigned wheels, and Xpander Cross badging on the hood and on the tailgate. Though we're not certain, it seems like the Xpander Cross will also have higher ground clearance as well.

For now, it is uncertain what engine and powertrain will be used in the Xpander Cross. We do expect it to have the same 1.5-liter engine as the Xpander with an automatic. However, it is still uncertain whether Mitsubishi will be offering the new model with 4WD. Inside, expect the cabin to be likely carried over from the Xpander to the Xpander Cross.

Mitsubishi expanding the Xpander lineup with a new rugged Xpander Cross model will allow it to better compete against competitors like the Toyota Rush and the Honda BR-V. It will also give customers more choices whether they want a more rugged looking model or something a bit more stylish.

So if you were expecting the Adventure name to be revived, well, we got our hopes up, too. But, there might still be a chance that Mitsubishi Motors Philippines would rename it to "Adventure" locally, so here's to hoping.
