Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino has expressed his opposition of a proposal made by Ariel Inton, a board member of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), to ban private vehicles on EDSA during morning rush hours on weekdays based on multiple reports.
LTFRB board member Ariel Inton proposed that private vehicles will not be allowed on EDSA from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. four days a week to ease traffic and to give more road space for public transport vehicles.
With this, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said that LTFRB's proposal is “unrealistic” and needs further study. Tolentino also said that people use private vehicles because the country's mass transport system is not effective.
“The reason people use private vehicles is because our mass transport system is not effective. Mass transit is part of the solution, as well as the Civil Service Commission’s four-day workweek and alternative forms of transport like the Pasig River ferry service,” Tolentino said.
Based on MMDA records, there are more people riding in private vehicles while on EDSA druing weekdays and weekends.
The MMDA says there are about 241,772 private vehicles on EDSA during Fridays, Satrurdays and Sundays. On Fridays, there are around 327,000 vehicles on EDSA's northbound lane and about 121,000 private vehicles on Saturdays.
