Motorists that frequently use U-turn slots along EDSA will have to find alternate means to get around.
This comes after the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) revealed plans to close all existing U-turn slots along the major thoroughfare. The closing of the U-turn slots is to make the running of the carousel bus route more efficient.
With it, many U-turn slots from Caloocan City all the way to Pasay City will be closed off.
Starting with the ones in the Caloocan City area, the U-Turn slots from Monumento Circle to Balintawak Cloverleaf will all be closed. These will include the General Tinio U-turn slot, De Jesus Street / 8th Street left-turn slot, and the General Malvar U-turn slot.
All affected vehicles must make a turn at Monumento Circle (from northbound side to southbound) and Balintawak Cloverleaf (from southbound side to northbound) towards their destination. Meanwhile, vehicles coming from NLEX towards or taking left at A. De Jesus / 8th Street must go straight and take A. Bonifacio Avenue, then make a right at C3/Sgt. Rivera.
In Quezon City, all U-turn slots from Balintawak Cloverleaf to Quezon Avenue will be shut to traffic. These include the Balintawak Market U-turn slot in front of BPI, Kaingin Road U-turn slot n front of Nissan, Congressional LRT Station U-turn slot in front of PANORAMA, Corregidor intersection/Bansalangin U-turn slots, and the North Avenue U-turn slots before MRT North Avenue Station. Motorists that frequently take these slots will have to take use of the Balintawak Cloverleaf or Quezon Avenue U-turn to head to their destination.
In addition, the Santolan/Boni Serrano U-turn slot in front of Camp Crame will also be closed to motorists in the future. Those that need to make a U-turn will have to use the service road/intersection under the Santolan flyover (northbound to southbound).
Over in Makati, motorists that regularly take the U-turn slot under Kalayaan Flyover will instead have to make a U-Turn using the service road/intersection of EDSA/Ayala Avenue to get where they need to go.
Finally, the U-Turn slots between Taft Avenue and Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City are also set to be closed. The P. Celle U-Turn slot, as well as the one before Roxas Boulevard near Heritage Hotel, will be closed to traffic. Affected motorists coming from FB Harrison (northbound to southbound) will have to go underneath the Magallanes flyover and make a U-Turn. Meanwhile, vehicles coming from southbound to northbound must take the signalized intersection or MOA Circle to get around.
The MMDA has also just confirmed that the closure of the U-turn slots will take place from September 28, 2020.
While the closure of these slots may be seen as a sort of hassle by motorists that regularly use them, it might lessen the chances of vehicles getting into an accident with the carousel buses. We can, however, expect heavier traffic at the new designated U-turn slots given the extravehicular volume.
