In another bid to reduce traffic volume along Metro Manila’s main thoroughfare, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is considering implementing a modified ‘odd-even’ scheme along EDSA. Supposedly a follow-up to the clearing of illegally parked vehicles and obstruction to several Mabuhay Lanes in the metro, this new scheme is supposed to supplement the MMDA’s efforts to ease flow of traffic around the city.
According to MMDA’s General Manager Tim Orbos, should their efforts to revitalize the Mabuhay Lanes succeed they may soon get the go-ahead from city mayors to push through with the modified odd-even scheme. If things go according to plan, we may soon see this scheme being implemented sometime in April.
Orbos explains that the modified scheme – which may likely affect 2.5 million private vehicles – will not replace the unified vehicular volume reduction program (a.k.a. the number coding scheme) and will instead compliment the rules already in place.
Dubbed the “Windows Two” traffic scheme, private cars – apart from having to comply with number coding – would also be banned for three two-hour intervals along EDSA on weekdays.
Vehicles with plates ending in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9) will be banned from plying EDSA from 7 AM to 9AM, 1PM to 3PM, and 5PM to 7PM. On the other hand, cars with plates ending in even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8, and 0) will be prohibited from driving edsa from 9AM to 11AM, 3PM to 5PM, and 7PM to 9PM.
Orbos further adds that this measure will take effect starting from Magallanes in Makati City all the way to North Avenue in Quezon City. Supposedly this measure will reduce vehicular volume by half and increase travel speeds from 19 km/h to 40 km/h.
