Traffic along the Kalookan area of EDSA might get a little lighter soon. That's because the MMDA recently re-opened a U-Turn slot to ease congestion along the busy thoroughfare. This comes after the agency received complaints about heavy traffic in the area.
MMDA re-opened the Gen. Tinio U-Turn slot weeks after the Gen. Malvar slot was closed to make way for the bus lane. That means motorists don't have to go all the way to the EDSA Cloverleaf to turn around. This U-Turn slot is located less than a kilometer away from the Gen. Malvar slot. Your landmarks are BDO EDSA – East Caloocan Branch and UniOil EDSA North.
But there's another reason why the MMDA re-opened this slot. According to chairman Benjamin Abalos, it's for the pending construction of the elevated bus ramps in EDSA. Per the agency, under the planned elevated bus ramps, vehicles can use the U-Turn slots below the elevated ramps which will be exclusively used by public utility buses.
"We are grateful for the immediate action of the MMDA to resolve the traffic in the area," said Caloocan City Mayor, Oscar Malapitan. For his part, Mayor Malapitan said he will deploy his city's own traffic personnel from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM to assist the MMDA.
Abalos added that the Gen. Tinio U-Turn slot will remain open until the construction of the elevated bus ramps to ease the flow of traffic in the area. At the moment, the MMDA has not announced the start of construction for the new busway.
“We are already coordinating with the Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Works and Highways for the design and eventual building of the elevated bus ramps,” said Abalos.
