Implementation of HOV/Carpool lane on EDSA postponed
On December 11, 2017, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) began a week-long dry run of the high occupancy vehicle (HOV) or carpool lane which ran the entire stretch of EDSA. After just a week, the MMDA has decided to cancel its implementation after the agency encountered difficulties in determining whether heavily tinted vehicles were complying with the new policy.
Originally, implementation with fines were set to begin today, a week after the dry run. However, that has been temporarily set aside until the MMDA can come up with a solution regarding the issue. According to the agency, both MMDA personel and the camera's placed on EDSA had a hard time seeing through heavily tinted vehicles.
For now, the MMDA will continue studying on how to tackle the problem and whether or not there will be a need to implement the HOV/Carpool lane. Should it be implemented, the new policy could take effect as early as the first quarter of 2018.
The HOV or carpool lane is located on the inner most lane of EDSA. The new policy mandates that only vehicles with 2 or more passengers may travel along the lane, while other vehicles may use the motorcycle lane (2nd lane) and third and fourth lanes along EDSA. Violators will be fined Php 500 should the new policy be implemented.
