The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is addressing the extreme traffic congestion on the southbound lane of EDSA during morning rush hours by opening a zipper-lane or a counterflow lane starting Monday, January 23, 2017.
In order to ease the congestion along the southbound lane, the MMDA will open a zipper-lane from Main Avenue in Cubao, Quezon City until EDSA-Ortigas Flyover across Guadix-MRT Ortigas. This will allow motorists to bypass the gridlock in Santolan and Connecticut.
“We have looked into this and we found out that the traffic in opposite direction (northbound) is not as heavy on those times,” said MMDA General Manager Thomas Orbos.
To make the zipper-lane seamless, the U-turn slot in the middle of EDSA in Camp Crame, Santolan and flyover ramp from EDSA to Ortigas Avenue to Greenhills will be closed to traffic and diverted to the right side service roads in the area.
Traffic enforcers will be deployed in the area to assist motorists during the enforcement of the zipper-lane.
The MMDA will hold a dry run of the zipper-lane on Friday, January 20, from 9:30a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
