As the construction of the MRT-7 line progresses through the whole span of Commonwealth Avenue and through the Quezon City Circle, motorists have been affected by construction over the past couple years. While the far north and a chunk of the QC Circle has seen the most congestion from this effort, another key artery will see closure to continue construction: The Tandang Sora Flyover.

Standing for over two decades as a bypass for the wide Tandang Sora Intersection, the flyover served to streamline traffic throughout Commonwealth Avenue. Unfortunately, according to the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), its days are officially numbered. By February 23rd 11 pm, the Tandang Sora Flyover – and the intersection underneath it – will close to make way for demolition and the subsequent rise of the MRT-7 Tandang Sora station.

MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia said the closure will be "definite" and permanent whereas transport authorities seek solutions to traffic around Commonwealth Avenue.

"Hindi lang temporary 'to, kasi nga gagawan natin ng solusyon na mas mabilis. 'Yung Tandang Sora na 'yan, definitely hindi na rin matatawiran dahil yung MRT dadaan diyan," Garcia said during the MMDA media briefing.

“This is not temporary, as we’re finding faster solutions to (ease the flow) of traffic. That (bridge) cannot be crossed as the MRT line will literally pass through that area.”

For now, affected motorists will have to divert towards temporary U-Turn slots 500 meters away from the large intersection on both directions. Authorities are looking at installing elevated U-Turn slots for motorists that will be affected by this closure, but no certain schemes have been devised.

Garcia further states that this closure will take effect well into 2020 or until the MRT-7 line is complete.
