Honda has just taken the wraps off their latest concept car at Detroit: the Urban SUV concept. The fresh concept car hints at the design direction for an all-new small SUV slated to launch in Japan by the end of 2013.

"No one has had greater success with small cars than Honda, and this Urban SUV Concept will create new value in the growing small-SUV segment," said John Mendel, EVP of sales at American Honda. "With the continued expansion of our North American manufacturing operations, we expect fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive 'small' cars to play a key role in meeting the needs of our customers in the U.S."

Based on the Honda Fit/Jazz platform, the Urban SUV Concept measures 4,300 mm in length making the Urban SUV Concept 400mm longer than the existing Jazz and is 230mm shorter than the CR-V. It showcases a sophisticated design statement featuring dynamic character lines and a strong stance, with hidden rear door handles to give the crossover a coupe-like presence. It represents the expansion of the Global Compact Series line which includes the Fit/Jazz as well as the Asian-market City.

The Urban SUV Concept's production version is slated to be launched in Japan by the end of 2013 and is set to be manufactured in Mexico (alongside the Fit) in the spring of 2014.
