A new concept car called the Bolt EV was recently introduced by Chevrolet at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. It was envisioned by the American automaker as 'an affordable, long-range all-electric vehicle' that will be available in the USA and in other markets around the world.
“The Bolt EV concept is a game-changing electric vehicle designed for attainability, not exclusivity. Chevrolet believes electrification is a pillar of future transportation and needs to be affordable for a wider segment of customers,” said General Motors CEO Mary Barra.
Superficially, the Bolt EV concept hatchback slightly resembles the Volt in terms of its front bumper, grill and headlight design. It has a distinct character line on its side while the rear features thin headlight design along with a big glass area for the tailgate. Also important to note is that the Bolt EV concept has virtually no overhangs on both front and rear sections. Lightweight materials such as aluminum, magnesium, carbon fiber and woven mesh are used on the Bolt EV concept, which gives the car a unique design as well as less weight.
It has an 'airy, intuitive' interior according to Chevrolet as it has generous amounts of headroom and legroom thanks to the car's flat, flow-through floor. The use of a light color scheme also helps in providing an open cabin added Chevrolet. The brand's signature dual-cockpit design is used on the Bolt EV concept and comes with a minimalistic center console that seems to 'float' inside the cabin.
With the help of the Bolt EV concept app, the smartphone has been integrated onto the car's system and allows multiple functions which include: the smartphone acting as a key fob, ride-sharing management and automatic park-and-retrieval technology.
No exact powertrain has been detailed by the American automaker but they did state that it is capable of providing a maximum range of 321 km, support DC recharging and may be priced at around USD 30,000 (about PHP 1.34 million).
