Volkswagen recently release images and details about the Cross Coupe GTE concept ahead of its debut at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan. Designed to preview an upcoming 7-seater midsize SUV for the US market, the Cross Coupe GTE shows the brand's new design language for North America, along with a hybrid system that outputs more than 350 PS.
"The Cross Coupe GTE is the ambassador of a new design language developed by Volkswagen for the U.S. The concept car has a commanding presence; it is powerful with a look that could almost be described as aggressive," said Klaus Bischoff, Chief Designer at Volkswagen.
Painted in Grand Pacific Glacier Blue, the front-end of the of Cross Coupe GTE features a two-bar aluminum grill design that merge the inner radiator grill, LED headlights, DRLs and turning signals into one look. Along its side, the Cross Coupe GTE has short overhangs, flared wheel arches, sloped A- and B- pillars and 22-inch wheels wrapped in 285/40/R22 tires, highlighting the car's ruggedness and sportiness according to Volkswagen.
The rear also features the brand's design language which focuses on defined horizontal lines. It has trapezoidal taillights, an aluminum trim for the tailgate, dual exhausts integrated on the rear bumper and a skidplate fitted with a diffuser.
Inside the Cross Coupe GTE, the horizontal lines from the outside also make their way inside. The five-seater concept uses gloss black panels and chrome elements to trim the cabin while an Ink Blue nappa leather graces the dashboard. On the other hand, the seats are upholstered in a two-tone semi-aniline nappa leather. The center console has a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen that has gesture recognition technology, while the instrument panel makes use of a 12.3-inch screen that displays information such as drive mode, navigation and assistance functions.
Its hybrid powertrain consist of a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 276 PS with 349 Nm of torque along with 2 electric motors, a 14.1 kWh lithium ion battery pack and a AWD system. Combined, the Cross Coupe GTE has a total system output of 358 PS and 379 Nm of torque, enabling it go from 0–97 km/h in 6 seconds and reach a top speed of 209 km/h. It also has an EV mode wherein the 114 PS / 270 Nm rear electric motor powers the car alone and is good for up to 32 km.
