All-new Chevrolet gets major redesign, new lightweight components

Weeks after releasing the first images of the new Silverado, the Chevrolet has officially revealed the all-new half-ton pickup at the 2018 North American International Auto Show. Compared to its predecessor, the bow-tie brand claimed that the 2019 Silverado is now lighter, larger, more high-tech and is now available with a turbo-diesel engine.

Thanks to extensive use of high-strength steel along with aluminum components, Chevrolet claimed that the new Silverado is 200 kg lighter than the previous model. This was made possible by making the doors, hood and tailgate out of aluminum. Meanwhile, the fenders, roof and bed are fabricated from steel. Beside making the truck lighter, the 2019 Silverado also has better torsional rigidity thanks to the use of new alloys.

Aside from the body and chassis, Chevrolet also used lightweight components on its suspension system. The front independent short / long arm suspension now have new forged aluminum upper control arms that are lighter and provide better wheel alignement than stamped parts. As for the live rear axle, it has been redesigned and can come with carbon-composite springs on LT models which are lighter and more durable than steel.

With an emphasis on space and utility, the 2019 Silverado has been made more spacious and more ergonomic. It also comes with more comfortable seats and additional interior cargo storage than before. These include two 10-liter bins integrated on the second-row seatbacks and a large 24-liter storage tray under the second-row seat.

Other features available in the Silverado include a MyLink touchscreen infotainment system, 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and wireless phone charging. Come 2019, Chevrolet will be introducing new safety and convenience features as well.

A plethora of engines will be available for the 2019 Silverado including two-gasoline powered V8s that are available in either 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter displacements. Both engines will come with cylinder deactivation called Dynamic Fuel Managment. This will enable the engine to shut off any number of cylinders to optimize fuel efficiency.

There is also a new turbo-diesel option in the form of a 3.0-liter inline-six Duramax. Exact output figures have yet to be released on the engines. However, Chevy did mention that the 6.2-liter V8 and 3.0-liter Duramax diesel will be connected to a new 10-speed automatic transmission.
