Volkswagen is looking to market the Passat to a much wider audience it seems. Originally a concept launched during the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, Volkswagen has officially released the production version of the the Passat GT at this year's North American International Auto Show.

Essenitally a sportier version of the humble four-door, it gets a a plethora of exterior updates, a lowered suspension and a new exhaust.

Unlike standard models, the Passat GT comes standard with LED headlights with LED daytime running lights (DRLs). It also gets a R-Line front bumper and a black honeycomb front grill with red accent lines. Meanwhile, the roof, side mirrors and window trim are all finished in gloss black.

Two-tone 19-inch Tornado alloy wheels, along with a sport suspension give the Passat GT a more planted stance according to Volkswagen. Behind the wheels are red-painted brake calipers which further accentuate the sedan's new found sportiness. Towards the rear, the Passat GT gets a black spoiler, blackened taillights and a black rear bumper trim. Other than that, it now also has a dual sport exhaust setup.

Stepping inside, the Passat GT largely resembles its standard variants. To make it stand out, Volkswagen installed piano black trim pieces on the center console and aircon vents. It even gets carbon fiber optic décor, a black headliner and GT door sill plates made from aluminum. All of the seats are upholstered in black leatherette and come with contrast stitching. Other features that come as standard on the Passat GT include leather-wrapped steering wheel, 8-way power adjust driver's seat, dual-zone Climatronic automatic climate control and heated side mirrors.

Providing in-car entertainment is a 6.3-inch Composition Media touchscreen display. Bluetooth connectivity, as well as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and MirrorLink are standard features on the infotainment system. The Passat GT also has two USB ports; one placed at the center console and the other placed at the rear seat console.

Driving the Passat GT is a 3.6-liter TSI VR6 that is hooked up to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters. It pushes out 284 PS at 6200 rpm along with a healthy 350 Nm of torque at 2500 rpm.

The Passat GT will be produced in limited numbers and will be available in four exterior colors: Deep Black, Platinum Gray, Pure White and Reflex Silver.
